Blue Frontiers is also looking to launch Varyon, a token that aims to increase variation in governance to buy goods and services within the Blue Frontiers ecosystem. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Varyon allows you to do everything from buying or renting space on a Seastead, registering businesses, or becoming a \u201cvirtual resident\u201d in a Blue Frontiers SeaZone. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LwCu4IuSmvc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The video does bring up an interesting point &#8211; <\/span><b>7.6 billion people live under the authority of around 193 land-based governments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As we\u2019ve seen with any news since the dawn of time, central governments range from mediocre at best to genocidal at worst. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue Frontiers isn\u2019t the only project aiming to embrace the human desire for freedom untethered to a specific nation or government. \u00a0Take Tim Draper-endorsed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/papua-new-guinea-newest-deregulated-economic-block\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ledger Atlas\u2019 mission in Papa New Guinea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to design and operate a special economic zone for crypto, the blockchain, and innovation. Additionally, countries like Singapore, Malta, Switzerland, the Cayman Islands, Lichtenstein, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/as-blockchain-booms-small-countries-become-thriving-hubs-for-crypto-industry\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other smaller countries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are enticing with blockchain-friendly and digital-citizen-friendly policies and incentives. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dystopian Search for Utopia<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea is slightly reminiscent of Galt\u2019s Gulch\u2014an 11,000+ acre plot of fertile land in the valleys of the Chilean Andes named after the fictional location where the world\u2019s industrious and competent innovators fled in Ayn Rand\u2019s Atlas Shrugged (also relevant here). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Residents in Galt\u2019s Gulch Chile made a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/bn53b3\/atlas-mugged-922-v21n10\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious attempt to build a sanctuary for free marketers and anarcho-capitalists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where residents could work while enjoying Chile\u2019s climate and low taxes, with an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/schumpeter\/2013\/12\/26\/bitcoin-paradise\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">economy based on Bitcoin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6ACyTkJOjww\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are very happy to offer the respite from the Western world of oppressive governments to freedom-minded people in which they can build a new, more prosperous community,&#8221; Jeff Berwick, one of the founders of Galt\u2019s Gulch Chile, wrote in May 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBitcoin as the John Galt coin? Why shouldn&#8217;t it be?\u201d- Ken Johnson, another founder and managing partner.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea unraveled within two years of its 2012 launch due to personal and legal conflicts, and what The Economist called \u201cBitcoin paradise\u201d now looks like a crazy utopian pipe dream. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although it might be hasty to write off Galt\u2019s Gulch Chile as an elaborate con, several involved parties have accused the leadership of corruption. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;A con of this magnitude could only have existed in the libertarian community because [Johnson] used their paranoia and distrust of the government to say, &#8216;Put everything in a trust, I won&#8217;t tell anybody who you are, don&#8217;t let anyone find out you&#8217;re investing, and I prefer you use precious metal or Bitcoins so it can&#8217;t be traced,'&#8221; potential investor Josh Kirley noted. &#8220;It really worked out well, whether it was intentional or just the perfect storm.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it\u2019s worth crediting GGC for its early (for crypto) attempt to build a digital-asset-based economy. For perspective, Bitcoin\u2019s price hovered around $125 during the duration of the attempt. The irony is that the $1.5 million in sales in Bitcoin GGC was able to generate in 2013 would be about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/schumpeter\/2013\/12\/26\/bitcoin-paradise\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$10 &#8211; $105 million today <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(assuming price fluctuations in 2013, information provided by The Economist). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blockchain-based governance models weren\u2019t necessarily as fleshed out back then as they are today. Today, a variety of offerings would easily solve the lack of transparency and trust. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Final Thoughts<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seasteading aims to offer a solution, if not practical at least theoretically cathartic, for the world\u2019s population that wants to exercise optionality in where and how they live.
