Bitcoin skyrocketed up to <\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><b>$17,500.00 <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on CoinMarketCap. Some Bitcoin enthusiasts have their eye on $20k, $30k, and even $50k, while some Bitcoin antagonists are continuing their not-so-veiled doomsday prophecies disguised as concerns for their friends\u2019 financial well being. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Alts Took a Breather:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> One of most notable alt growths this week was IOTA, nearly <\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><b>4xing<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in price. Many of the other alts took it easy this week, slightly pulling back from the explosive growth they saw last week. Ethereum fizzled back down to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>$430.00<\/strong><\/span>, Litecoin fell to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>$97.00<\/strong><\/span>, Dash dropped to around <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>$690.00<\/strong><\/span>. Love cats? Cryptokitties exploded onto the scene this week. Reminiscent of Neopets, CryptoKitties is essentially a platform for the purchase and exchange of digital kittens <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2017\/12\/06\/meet-cryptokitties-the-new-digital-beanie-babies-selling-for-100k.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">powered by the Ethereum blockchain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Users can buy cats, breed them, and sell the offspring to other users. CryptoKitties brought in about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kittysales.herokuapp.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$7 million-worth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of exchanges, with some users being able to consistently receive a 200% to 400% return on their kittens in a span of a few hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4463 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Screen-Shot-2017-12-07-at-5.37.46-PM.png\" alt=\"cryptokitty\" width=\"880\" height=\"660\" srcset=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Screen-Shot-2017-12-07-at-5.37.46-PM.png 880w, https:\/\/coincentral.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Screen-Shot-2017-12-07-at-5.37.46-PM-591x443.png 591w, https:\/\/coincentral.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Screen-Shot-2017-12-07-at-5.37.46-PM-621x466.png 621w, https:\/\/coincentral.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Screen-Shot-2017-12-07-at-5.37.46-PM-600x450.png 600w, https:\/\/coincentral.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Screen-Shot-2017-12-07-at-5.37.46-PM-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/coincentral.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Screen-Shot-2017-12-07-at-5.37.46-PM-768x576.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it weird? Yes. Am I going to buy a CryptoKitten at some point? Probably. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The launch of CryptoKitties saw a major strain on the Ethereum network with up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/etherscan.io\/chart\/pendingtx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">32,903 transactions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> waiting to be processed at a single time. CryptoKitties put a stress-test on the Ethereum network, shedding some light on some of Ethereum\u2019s practical scalability issues. If Ethereum is having trouble dealing with something as silly as the single game of CryptoKitties, it\u2019s in trouble. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, this is something that re-energized the critical discussion of how Ethereum can move past these issues. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Big Short: Bitcoin Edition?: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rumor that there is going to be a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/short-bitcoin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">massive short on Bitcoin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has started to gather some steam. With the planned introduction of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/bitcoin-futures-trading-need-know\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bitcoin futures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contracts at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the option to bet against Bitcoin is going to attract a significant amount of interest. Bitcoin\u2019s growth has been to the tunes of millions of percent since it started in 2010, and some people are looking at Bitcoin as one of the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/amp\/news\/articles\/2017-12-04\/the-next-big-short-hedge-funds-prepare-to-trade-against-bitcoin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">greatest shorting opportunities ever<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it is just a rumor, the idea that the estranged world of traditional finance is going to utilize the introduction of Bitcoin futures to make some sizeable returns doesn\u2019t seem too far-fetched. This sounds especially reasonable given the fact that big names such as JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon are having their reputations dragged through the dirt every week Bitcoin picks up more and more growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Steam Breaks Up with Bitcoin: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valve, the owner of video game distribution platform Steam, stated that it is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2017\/12\/6\/16742622\/steam-ends-support-bitcoin-volatility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ending support for Steam purchases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made with Bitcoin because of the \u201chigh fees and volatility\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the price of Bitcoin continues to rapidly sway between highs and lows, and the increase in transaction fees continues to increase, it\u2019s difficult for platforms such as Steam to reasonable utilize Bitcoin as a payment option. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some Bitcoin transaction fees topped around $20 a transaction, which is much less palatable compared to the original $0.20 fees when Steam first enabled Bitcoin. It didn\u2019t make much sense for people purchasing a $50 video game to spend an additional $20 just for the transaction. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is one of the first major retailers and distribution outlets to pull their support of Bitcoin as a payment method, which is a sizeable blow to the idea that Bitcoin is a convenient payment method for day to day transactions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bridging the Gap: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Bitcoin continues to grow in price, many new projects are coming out with new ways to bridge the gap between traditional banking and cryptocurrency. For example, one of the projects, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/12\/05\/revolut-cryptocurrency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revolut<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is a $90 million-funded mobile banking startup aiming to help people spend their crypto on daily transactions in a more user-friendly way. Someone using the Revolut debit card would be able to fund their transactions with cryptocurrency if they run out of fiat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bank of America Sets Sights on Crypto: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bank of America, the second largest bank in the United States, won a patent to create a unique, automated cryptocurrency exchange system that would convert digital currencies into others. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The patent also describes a three-part system, where the first part is the customer\u2019s account and the other two are accounts owned by the business running the system. Users can store their cryptocurrency \u00a0In their customer account, the second account would hold the cryptocurrency as a \u201cfloat account\u201d, and the third would carry the equivalent amount of the new currency and transfer it to the original customer account. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The patent claims this service would be for enterprise-level customers, \u201c&#8221;Enterprises may handle a large number of financial transactions on a daily basis. As technology advances, financial transactions involving cryptocurrency have become more common. The \u201cpetro\u201d will help Venezuela \u201cadvance in issues of monetary sovereignty, to make financial transactions and overcome the financial blockade.\u201d This is referring to the U.S. sanctions that have impacted Venezuela&#8217;s ability to move money through international banks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The irony in Venezuela suddenly announcing they\u2019re starting a cryptocurrency for the above reasons is that many of Venezuela\u2019s citizens are starting to become heavily involved in cryptocurrency mining in order to circumvent the government\u2019s controls on their ability to find USD, make purchases online, as well as the rapid inflation of the native bol\u00edvar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bulgaria Bags Bitcoin:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Bulgarian government is sitting on roughly 213,519 Bitcoins (about $3.4 billion) from an organized crime crackdown back in May. Authorities commented on the seizure, \u201cThe offenders choose the bitcoin way of investing\/saving the money because it is rather difficult to be tracked and followed.&#8221; The alleged criminals were also accused of creating a virus that hacked Bulgarian Customs computers that allowed them to bypass paying fees when transporting goods into Bulgaria. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A Future in Tokyo: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Tokyo Financial Exchange has started brewing actions around the idea of creating a Bitcoin future offering on their exchange. Similar to the upcoming CME and CBOE futures offerings, the Tokyo Financial Exchange would allow even more people to access Bitcoin futures contracts. This launch, however, is contingent upon the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/tokyo-financial-exchange-planning-bitcoin-futures-launch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recognizing cryptocurrencies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as financial products. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Wrestlemania: Bitcoin vs. China + Russia? <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another rumor circulating around is that Bitcoin could hit as high as $60,000 before a sharp and steep crash to below $1,000. This sudden plummet will be due to China and Russia \u201cunleashing a multi-pronged assault on the decentralized cryptocurrency ecosystem to \u201cshift the focus away from Bitcoin\u201d because of their concerns about a capital flight.
