The self-described &#8220;third generation blockchain&#8221; is the first of its kind to be created from scientific philosophy and built on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardanohub.org\/en\/academic-papers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">peer-reviewed academic research<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team behind Cardano is creating it with both the end-user and regulators in mind. They&#8217;re attempting to find a middle ground that balances the need for regulation with the privacy and decentralization principles at the core of blockchain technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The platform also uniquely uses <strong>Haskell<\/strong>, a programming language with a high degree of fault tolerance. With the relatively unknown future and complexity of blockchain-based systems, it\u2019s important to build flexibility into projects. It\u2019s near impossible to know what a system may have in months or even years, so it&#8217;s important to have a robust language like Haskell which allows for a certain margin of error.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/files.coinmarketcap.com\/static\/widget\/currency.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike some other crypto projects, the goal of the Cardano team isn\u2019t to overhaul the entire financial system. This separation enables the smart contracts on the platform to be more flexible. It also provides b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">usinesses the opportunity to tailor the design, privacy, and execution of each contract to more perfectly fit their specific use-cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardano Settlement Layer (CSL)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The Cardano Settlement Layer (CSL) acts as the balance ledger<\/strong> and is the first layer of the platform. Created as an improvement to <a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/what-is-bitcoin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bitcoin<\/a>, this layer acts as a cryptocurrency built from the whitepaper <\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/iohk.io\/research\/papers\/#9BKRHCSI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ouroboros: A Provably Secure Proof of Stake Blockchain Protocol<\/span><\/a><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Aggelos Kiayias.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/whycardano.com\/#designing-in-layers-cardano-settlement-layer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CSL<\/a> uses a <strong>proof-of-stake consensus algorithm<\/strong> to generate new blocks and confirm transactions. And, it<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0includes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two sets of scripting languages<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One set to move value<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One set to enhance overlay protection support<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sidechains to link to other ledgers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple signature types including quantum resistant signatures<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple user-issued assets<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scalability in which the capabilities of the system increase as more users join <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardano Computation Layer (CCL)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cardano <a href=\"https:\/\/whycardano.com\/#cardano-computation-layer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Computation Layer (CCL)<\/a> is the second layer of the Cardano platform and <strong>contains\u00a0the information on why transactions occur<\/strong>. It&#8217;s within this layer that the Cardano smart contracts run.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because the computation layer is detached from the CSL, different users of the CCL can create different rules when evaluating transactions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, you could create a permissioned ledger that leaves out any transactions that don\u2019t include AML\/KYC data &#8211; something that will become more important as blockchain regulation continues to increase.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The Cardano team is creating a new programming language to use to develop smart contracts on the CCL &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/input-output-hk\/plutus-prototype\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Plutus<\/a>.<\/strong> The CCL also support Solidity, the language behind <a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/how-to-buy-ethereum\/\">Ethereum<\/a> smart contracts, for low assurance applications on the platform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help developers, Cardano also includes a reference library of Plutus code that\u2019s available to use in dapps. Beyond that, the team is creating a set of tools for the purpose of verifying code and improving code assurance. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KMZ Sidechains<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardano supports\u00a0sidechains based on a new protocol by Kiayias, Miller, and Zindros (KMZ) involving proofs of work. T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he KMZ sidechain protocol allows funds to move securely from the CSL to any CCL or any blockchain that also uses the protocol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this protocol, ledgers with certain regulatory compliances are able to interact with the CSL without having to share the data that needs to remain private.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daedalus Wallet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daedalus is an <a href=\"https:\/\/daedaluswallet.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">open-source wallet<\/a> created by the Cardano team.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s a <strong>multi-currency wallet<\/strong> in which you can freely exchange between the supported currencies. You can currently download the wallet on <a href=\"https:\/\/update-cardano-mainnet.iohk.io\/daedalus-0.11.1-cardano-sl-1.3.1-mainnet-windows-9228.exe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Windows<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/update-cardano-mainnet.iohk.io\/daedalus-0.11.1-cardano-sl-1.3.1-mainnet-macos-2887.pkg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MacOS<\/a> operating systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ouroboros-proof-of-stake\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADA and Ouroboros Proof-of-Stake <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cardano team has set that there\u2019ll be a maximum of <strong>45 billion<\/strong>\u00a0ADA coins that will ever be created. New coins enter the ecosystem and nodes validate transactions through a unique consensus algorithm,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iohk.io\/research\/papers\/#9BKRHCSI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ouroboros Proof-of-Stake (PoS)<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this protocol, slot leaders generate new blocks in the blockchain and verify the transactions. <strong>Anyone holding a Cardano ADA coin can become a slot leader<\/strong>. When the <a href=\"https:\/\/cardanodocs.com\/cardano\/proof-of-stake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cFollow the Satoshi\u201d<\/a> algorithm selects a coin that you hold, you become a slot leader and publish new blocks to the network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your node automatically does this process, so you don\u2019t have to worry about manually verifying each transaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"cardano-fees\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardano Fees<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/cardanodocs.com\/cardano\/transaction-fees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fees<\/a> to transfer ADA vary and are determined by the following equation:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>transfer fee = a + b * size<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>a<\/strong> = a constant currently equaling 0.155381 ADA<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>b<\/strong> = a constantly currently equaling 0.000043946 ADA\/byte<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>size<\/strong> = size of the transaction in bytes<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This effectively means that the minimum transaction fee you\u2019ll pay is 0.155381 ADA and will increase by 0.000043946 ADA with each byte increase of your transaction size.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The transaction fees of each <a href=\"https:\/\/cardanodocs.com\/glossary\/#epoch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">epoch<\/a> are collected in a pool and distributed amongst the appropriate slot leaders. An epoch is simply a period of time in which slot leaders validate transactions. When one epoch ends, the next one immediately starts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[thrive_leads id=&#8217;5219&#8242;]<\/p>\n<h3>The Treasury<\/h3>\n<p>Other than to slot leaders, a portion of each block reward also goes towards a treasury. If you&#8217;d like to receive funding to contribute to the Cardano ecosystem, you need to apply for a grant through the Treasury. Stakeholders then vote whether or not your grant is approved, giving you the funding. The goal with the Treasury is to create a self-sustaining ecosystem that continues to grow long after IOHK is finished with the project.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"cardano-history\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardano History<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Cardano shares many of its roots with Ethereum. The project&#8217;s two founders, Charles Hoskinson and Jeremy Wood, were instrumental to the early days of Ethereum in 2013.\u00a0 After leaving Ethereum, they joined forces in 2015 to create Input Output Hong Kong (IOHK), one of the companies behind Cardano.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">If I&#8217;m ever asked why cryptocurrencies exist, then I answer because this exists and we need a pushback <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/yxGiMLRDrW\">https:\/\/t.co\/yxGiMLRDrW<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Charles Hoskinson (@IOHK_Charles) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IOHK_Charles\/status\/1042185749775429635?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 18, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, three organizations are working together to develop Cardano:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cardanofoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Foundation<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/iohk.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Input Output Hong Kong (IOHK)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emurgo<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The Cardano Foundation is a non-profit that acts as the custodial agent of the project. Its goal is to support and grow the Cardano ecosystem. IOHK is a blockchain engineering company focused on building the actual project. And, Emurgo is blockchain project incubator that provides much of the funding.<\/p>\n<p>The team raised around $63 million during their almost two-year long ICO.<\/p>\n<h3>Roadmap<\/h3>\n<p>The project has a constantly evolving <a href=\"https:\/\/cardanoroadmap.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">roadmap<\/a>, but it follows a five-phase plan. The phases are as follows:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Byron<\/strong> &#8211; This is the phase Cardano is currently in. It includes the initial development of the main net and complementary functionality such as the Daedalus wallet. Everything scheduled for this phase is built, and the team is in the process of making improvements.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shelley\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; In this phase, the network becomes fully decentralized. Features here include delegation and stake pool test nets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Goguen<\/strong> &#8211; The team is in process of planning this phase. At this point in the roadmap, Cardano will have a virtual machine, called IELE, similar to the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). The platform will also have a universal language framework for future blockchain technology.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Basho &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>The team plans to improve scalability, security, and performance in this phase. They&#8217;ll also implement Ouroboros Praos, an improvement to the original Ouroboros protocol.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Voltaire &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>In the final phase, Cardano will implement the Treasury model, providing a self-sustaining ecosystem for the network.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Competition<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a smart contract platform, Cardano is competing with several similar crypto projects &#8211; most notably Ethereum. The project is also in competition with several newer projects focusing on smart contract development such as <a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/what-is-eos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EOS<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/what-is-lisk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lisk<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/what-is-neo-cryptocurrency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NEO<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/what-is-nem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NEM<\/a>. Out of these additional competitors, Cardano is the second-largest behind EOS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned before, the team is attempting to separate themselves by focusing on <strong>scalability through peer-reviewed research<\/strong> and highly secure<strong>\u00a0coding practices<\/strong>. Although this strategy does lead to slower product development, it greatly reduces the risk of critical bugs and show-stopping errors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"cardano-trading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trading<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardano had a lengthy ICO from September 2015 through January 2017, and the ADA token began trading on the open market in October 2017. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADA&#8217;s price remained relatively stable until the end of November 2017 when it jumped from ~$0.03 (0.00000345 BTC) to ~$0.14 (0.0000142 BTC) in 3 days. It had a spike in April 2018, seemingly\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">caused by the increasing number of exchanges listing ADA as well as the release of the roadmap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, those types of announcements most likely won&#8217;t have an effect on the price of the coin moving forward. The biggest positive influencers on the price from now on will probably be partnership announcements, roadmap achievements, and increased use of the network.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"where-to-buy-ada\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where to Buy ADA<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardanohub.org\/en\/buy-sell-ada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">purchase ADA<\/a> on several major exchange platforms.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/binance-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Binance<\/a> has the highest ADA trading volume of the exchanges and offers the coin as a trading pair with Bitcoin and Ethereum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To buy ADA on most platforms, you\u2019ll first need to purchase Bitcoin or Ethereum on another platform and transfer it over. <a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/gdax-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GDAX<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/gemini-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gemini<\/a> are good choices to start this process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADA will also be available for purchase through a network of ATM machines in Japan soon. There are no ATMs are available yet, however, and no timeline has been given<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"where-to-store-ada\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where to Store ADA<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to receive the reward from staking, you\u2019ll most likely need to store your ADA in a wallet on an exchange.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"conclusion\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardano is an ambitious project tackling a large number of problems in the crypto industry. After seeing the potential security flaws of Ethereum through the DAO hack and recent Parity wallet fiasco, it&#8217;s nice to see that Cardano has a focus on code scrutiny and peer-reviewed security measures. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This does come at a cost, however. With such an emphasis on security, don&#8217;t expect quick product updates<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
