A Beginner&#8217;s Guide on the Blockchain Super City"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polkadot connects different individual blockchains into a single network; it wants to do to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/what-is-blockchain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blockchain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> what the Internet did for solitary computers worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polkadot was founded by Dr. Gavin Wood, Robert Habermeier, and Peter Czaban under the Web3 Foundation, a Swiss foundation dedicated to facilitating a user-friendly and fully functional decentralized web.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wood is a Thiel Fellow and renowned technologist and has an extensive resume in the cryptocurrency and blockchain space\u2013 he is an Ethereum co-founder, founder of Parity Technologies, and the creator of smart contract programming language Solidity.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Habermeier, also a Thiel Fellow, is a reputable blockchain and cryptography developer. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Czaban is the Technology Director of the Web3 Foundation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polkadot was first proposed in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/polkadot.network\/PolkaDotPaper.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whitepaper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on November 14, 2016, as a means to solve many of the pressing issues of the various blockchains at the time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why is Polkadot special?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polkadot can process multiple transactions on several different blockchains in parallel using its \u201cParachain\u201d feature. Dubbed a sharded multichain network, Polkadot can help blockchains such as Ethereum become more scalable. Further, users can add custom blockchains to the Polkadot network with little to no friction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To better understand Polkadot\u2019s value add, it\u2019s best to explore the various issues that have limited and restricted blockchains. Let&#8217;s dive into our Polkadot guide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Issue #1: Scalability.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most popular blockchains are not scalable due to their structure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, once upon a time, transacting on Ethereum, the world&#8217;s most popular blockchain, cost just a few pennies to a few dollars ETH equivalent. Today, Ethereum gas fees have been as high as $250+.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The majority of blockchains bump into scaling issues in one way or another. It\u2019s impossible to speed up transactions, and as the demand for transaction processing increases, each transaction begins to cost more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin, which is established as a medium to transfer value peer-to-peer, can only process 4.5 transactions per second.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/what-is-ethereum-the-ultimate-beginners-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethereum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, introduced as Blockchain 2.0, fares a bit better at about 12 transactions per second.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In comparison, Visa\/Mastercard processes upwards of 2,500 transactions every second.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The slow processing of payments is one of the main obstacles for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in becoming commercial methods of payment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Issue #2: No or Limited Communication and Interchanging of Data.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dozens of blockchains were created in isolation, and it\u2019s not possible for them to communicate or exchange value between each other. For example, you can\u2019t send BTC on the ETH network. Even with DeFi services that allow for working across multiple currencies and blockchains, oracle services like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/what-is-chainlink-a-beginners-guide-to-decentralized-oracles\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ChainLink<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> must be used to get accurate real-time data on each coin&#8217;s current value.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Issue #3: Lack of Customization.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until the arrival of Ethereum, blockchains didn\u2019t support any customization of the transfer of value from one owner to another. Bitcoin, for example, only allowed for peer-to-peer transactions. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/what-is-a-smart-contract\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smart Contracts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made it possible to customize and program what can be achieved on a blockchain, to a limited extent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Does Polkadot Solve These Problems?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most blockchains tend to do one single thing very well. Polkadot uses the Relay Chain mainly to verify transactions, similar to how Bitcoin and Ethereum use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/making-sense-of-proof-of-work-vs-proof-of-stake\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proof of Work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/making-sense-of-proof-of-work-vs-proof-of-stake\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proof of Stake<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (POS) processes to verify transactions. On Polkadot, users can stake the native token DOT to help in the work of verifying transactions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the central component of Polkadot, the Relay Chain level <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.polkadot.network\/docs\/en\/learn-architecture#relay-chain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coordinates the system as a whole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, performing important functions like the verifying transactions and in making decisions on how to run the entire Polkadot architecture. There aren\u2019t many programmable or customizable options at this layer of Polkadot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The list of Relay Chain functions includes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transaction validation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nomination of parties who will stake their coins for validation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping historical data.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monitoring the entire Polkadot system&#8217;s health.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>The Parachain:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Parachain is a full-fledged blockchain application that sits on top of the Relay Chain. Polkadot describes it in its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/polkadot.network\/PolkaDotPaper.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whitepaper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as &#8220;an application-specific data structure that is globally coherent and validatable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Relay Chain, or the base layer, handles the security, transaction validation, and governance functions of each Parachain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Parachain is similar to other blockchain networks such as Bitcoin or Ethereum Blockchain. Polkadot is unique in that it can contain multiple blockchains within itself. Hypothetically, it can house both the Bitcoin and the Ethereum blockchains within itself and place each one as a Parachain.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If both the Bitcoin and Ethereum blockchains are in Parachains within Polkadot, they\u2019ll be able to communicate with each other and pass transactions from one to the other\u2014imagine converting BTC into ETH without an exchange. The blockchains communicate through a protocol called XCMP, which stands for &#8220;Cross-Chain Message Passing.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Parachain level only has a limited number of slots available, which are auctioned off by the Polkadot community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parachains offer a unique element of security. In theory, a 51% attack can be used to hack the Bitcoin blockchain. However, the collective nature of Parachains under the overall security structure of the Relay Chain could prevent such an attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Parathreads:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><b>Parathreads are temporary slots on the Polkadot network, primarily used to test out ideas.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parathreads are similar to Parachains in that they allow for the building of a special-use blockchain or application.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The difference between Parathreads and Parachains is that Parachains are more resource-intensive and more permanent than Parathreads\u2013 Parachains require a significant up-front investment to cover the high throughput.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Polkadot puts it, &#8220;Parathreads have the exact same API and functionality as parachains, but on a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pay as you go<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> basis.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of Parathreads and Parachains as a Process and a Thread that runs on a computer&#8217;s CPU. Traditionally, you\u2019d have to convert BTC into fiat and then convert into ETH, or buy ETH for BTC on an exchange. According to Polkadot, &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.polkadot.network\/docs\/en\/learn-bridges\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will be updated as more information is determined and available<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Polkadot Token (DOT): Tokenomics and Governance:<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polkadot utilizes its native token, DOT, for transaction processing, payments and governance. The main exchanges trading Polkadot (DOT) are usually <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/binance-review\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Binance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/what-is-a-perpetual-swap-taking-a-look-at-the-new-okex-launch\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OKEx<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/huobi-exchange-review-how-does-the-seychelles-based-exchange-stack-up\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Houbi Global<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polkadot Staking<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike the Power of Work (PoW) consensus where miners use electricity to validate blocks to be added to the Blockchain, the Proof of Stake (PoS) requires users to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coincentral.com\/how-to-earn-passive-income-with-cryptocurrencies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">validate blocks by staking their coins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 In the PoW consensus, anyone can create a node and mine the blocks.
